How to Ease Allergies from Dust Mites
Dust mites are tiny little creatures that live in your home—in your bedding, carpet, etc. Many people are allergic to dust mites and are looking for natural ways to fight the allergy symptoms that they trigger. Here are a few suggestions—
- Keep things cool and dry. Dust mites thrives in temperatures warmer than 70 degrees and humidity higher than 50 percent. Try to keep the temperature of your home in the mid to low 60’s and the humidity between 40 and 45 percent. This should help rid your home of dust mites.
- Use dust mite barriers. There are mattresses and pillowcase covers that are manufactured especially to keep out dust mites. You should also try for bedding made out of organic cotton.
- Wash your bedding. It will help to rid your bedding of dust mites if you can wash it in water that is at least 140 degrees. A study published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology found that this temperature pretty much wiped out all dust mites.
- Outsource Your Housekeeping. Vacuuming and cleaning can stir up dust mites and their droppings which will take at least two hours to settle. So, stay out of your house while it is being cleaned. If you can’t afford to hire a housekeeper, use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter and wear a dust mask.
- Acupuncture. Acupuncture has been shown to be very effective in reducing inflammation and decreasing stress hormones. Some amazing results have been seen in allergic patients.
